Cadets from 617 Squadron attended St. Oswalds Church, Malpas to celebrate the founding of the Air Training Corps on 5th February 1941.

617 (Heber) Squadron led the 2008 Malpas Rememberance Parade. Cadets paraded both the Royal British Legion and Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Standards through the streets of Malpas.

Cadets from 617 (Heber) Squadron took part in the Isle Of Wight Adventure Training Camp, hosted by 347 (Dudley) Squadron. During the week long camp cadets took part in activities including water sports, raft building, shooting, feildcraft, initiative exercises and walking.

Cadets from 617 (Heber) Squadron took part in this years wing training day. Cadets entered competitions including, Smartest Squadron, Smartest Cadet, Drill, First Aid and air modelling. 617 (Heber) Squadron won the best scratch build trophy which will take the squadron to competition at regional level.

617 (Heber) Squadron Air Training Corps held its first annual presentation at Hill Valley Golf and Country Club. The first presentation evening with the squadron under the command of Warrant Officer Francois Kamudu saw cadets presented with a variety of trophies and awards, which included BTEC in aviation studies, the first to be presented on the squadron. Cadet Matthew Lee received the trophy for best first class exam results, Sergeant William Taylor for overall exam achievements and best NCO. Cadet James Hellmers received the sports award and best cadet. Cadet Katie Putwain was awarded the Don Williams Memorial Trophy for the best Corps spirit.
The event was well attended with over eighty people, including a guest speaker, Wing Commander Lloyd Officer Commanding West Mercian Wing.
Cadets from 617 (Heber) Squadron Air Training Corps have recently participated in a variety of activities.
Cadet James Hellmers, 14, recently represented West Mercian Wing in the under 15 boys discus. Cdt Hellmers previously achieved gold when competing against cadets from the other 25 squadrons in the wing at the inter-squadron competition. Corporal Abigail Pritchard, 16, achieved bronze at discus at the inter-squadron competitions.
Six cadets represented the squadron at the inter-squadron orienteering competition recently. Cadet James Hellmers and Cadet Matthew Smith, were the first to finish from the squadron. Three cadets at the orienteering went on to enjoy an afternoon of gliding. Cadet Putwain, 14, "The day was a great experience. Although we got lost a couple of times during the orienteering, it only made the day more fun."
Cadets at the squadron are looking forward to a variety of different activities, both local and national. Corporal Kate Allen, 16, is one of three of cadets on the squadron who have applied to participate in a parachuting course. Cpl Allen says "I feel excited at the opportunity to perform a parachute jump, and am hoping I am selected for this course." Other activities cadets have recently enjoyed or are currently looking forward to include overseas camps, other inter-squadron competitions and a variety of expeditions in preparation for their Duke of Edinburgh award.
Cadets from 617 (Heber) Squadron ATC recently participated in the inter-squadron athletics. The squadron achieved two medals. Cadet james hellmers achieved first place in the under 15 boys discus event and will now represent West Mercian Wing in the inter-wing athletics. Cpl Abigail Pritchard achieved bronze in the junior women's discus competition.
Cadets Matthew Smith, 15, and James Hellmers, 13, recently ran cross country for their squadron, with Cdt Smith coming fourth and Cdt Hellmers 18th in their respective age groups. Cdt Smith (pictured) was selected to run as part of the under 17 team representing West Mercian Wing. Cdt Smith came in at a respectable 10th place, and received his Wing Blue award for participating. Prior to running for the Wing, Cdt Smith said "I am excited about having the opportunity to represent my Wing." James stated, "Although I wasn't chosen to run for the Wing, I enjoyed the day. I was able to meet up with friends from across the wing whom I had met on previous activities since joining the Squadron in January this year."

617 (Heber) Squadron recently held their annual squadron barbecue. The event was attended by cadets and their families, ex-cadets, members of staff and the civilian committee. Guests enjoyed many opportunities to participate in activities which the cadets enjoy on a regular parade night. During the evening two presentations were made to previous members of the civilian committee. Mr Tony Livesey was presented with a long service award for nearly 30 years work with the squadron. An award for commitment to the civilian committee was presented to Mrs Christine Clegg.
