Gliding
Within the Air Training Corps gliding is carried out
at one of the many Volunteer Gliding Squadron's (VGS's) situated around the country.
As the name suggests these squadrons are run by a mixture of volunteers who give up
their time to give you the opportunity to go up into the air. You will also be shown
the various aspects of aerodynamics and may enjoy one of the many tutorials on the effects
of controls in the air. Flights and lessons can sometimes mean an hour of enjoyment
for every cadet participating.
Many different courses are available for those with a great enthusiasm for flying starting with the initial glider induction course or GIC, during which you get acquainted with all the components of gliding in a simple thirty minute session in a vigilant glider. Further more advanced scholarships are open for cadets aged 16 and above who show both the commitment and motivation to work on improving their gliding ability to a high standard in order to complete the course. During these advanced courses cadets can enjoy full control of the aircraft for varying amounts of time.
617 Squadron actively encourages those with particular interests in any of our activities such as
gliding which is why they provide regular opportunities for cadets to visit RAF stations across the wing.
Cadets can also take part in any number of residential courses including our annual summer camp at which they
can enjoy many opportunities for both flying and gliding.
